![]() ![]() I'm glad I did! Once again the narration is superb and I no longer feel like this is fan fiction but a solid continuation to the story. I saw that Scott Brick who had been one of the narrators from the original Dune books was narrating this and thought I could take the plunge as it will be read to me by a familiar voice from the Dune world and it might be more believable. I ended up listening to the Dune audiobook in preparation to the new film adaptation and had loved the production of it and quickly went through all the original six books. Anderson and Brian Herbert's Dune books, but they were prequels and felt like fan fiction so I paid them little attention. When I had finished it, I was heartbroken that I would never get a resolution to the story that I loved with the cliff hanger that was left at the end of Dune Chapter House. I originally read the Dune books in the mid 90's after having grown up watching the David Lynch film as a child. He avenges the treasonous scheme against his noble lineage and realizes humanitys oldest and most elusive dream. There is no justification to powering through this mess besides seeing how shoddy it gets. Set on the arid planet of Arrakis, Dune narrates the tale of young Paul Atreides, who later transforms into the enigmatic figure known as Mauddib. If you're interested in the themes underneath Frank's writings, there's nothing here to engage with. If you're only interested in the plot, just read it on Wikipedia. Entire civilisations that were apparently there all along but unmentioned are suddenly critical to the threadbare plot. Characters from the first book are brought back in droves, with little explanation behind the motives to do so. The subtext that was rife in Frank's books - explorations of politics, ecology, the failure of great leader figures - is entirely absent. Narrated by a cast of 16 leading actors, complete with stunning sound effects and a dramatic soundtrack, this state-of-the-art production clocks in at a massive. The book wastes hours upon hours reiterating what the reader already knows, in an omniscient third person narrative that sucks any chance of immersion well and truly away. Unfortunately, the man is utterly without talent. It's commonly accepted among fans that with Brian Herbert quoted as calling himself a "slow writer" and the one-a-year pace at which these came out following Hunters of Dune, the chief writer of these sequels after Frank Herbert's death is Kevin J Anderson. But PLEASE DO NOT use this as your introduction to the dune universe, just read the book for yourself. An atrociously rambling, talentless rehashing ![]() Set on the desert planet Arrakis, the story follows Paul Atreides, a boy who will become the mysterious Maud'dib and bring humankind's dream of space travel to fruition. If you really want to relive the book without sitting down with a paperback, it works. Listen to the unabridged audiobook of Dune, the classic science fiction novel by Frank Herbert, read by Scott Brick and other narrators. ![]() Definitely not worth $26 or whatever it is. On a positive note, they set background music for some parts which is actually really well done and the Princess Irulan excerpts are very, very good. It was so distracting at points (Count Fenring) that I just had to skip ahead. And let me tell you, he is BAD at doing voices. Halfway through a chapter, the voice acting will just stop and it will go back to the primary narrator reading all the dialogue. The Dune Audio Collection By: Frank Herbert Narrated by: Frank Herbert Length: 3 hrs and 23 mins Language: English 4 out of 5 stars 102 ratings 15.29 or. Unfortunately they only do this for part of the dialogue for some reason. They brought in voice actors for the dialogue and they read it like a stage play and it actually works really well and the voice actors are great. The most distracting thing though is the way the narration changes throughout. Many pronunciations deviate from the norm, and some change throughout the book. Unfortunately, this is one of the most poorly executed audiobooks I’ve encountered. This is one of my favorite books, so I bought it to relive the story passively while I drive and do housework. ![]()
